Visiting Chinese Minister Chen Deming, who was accompanying Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU Summit in Brussels, met with European Commissioner for Trade De Gucht on October 4. The two parties exchanged views on promoting Sino-EU trade and economic cooperation, opposing trade protectionism, feasibility study on Sino-EU bilateral investment agreements, as well as preparation of the 3rd China-EU High Level Economic Dialogue.
Chen Deming expressed that China and EU are important trading partners, and that Sino-EU trade and economic relations have become an important engine, and have laid a solid foundation for the development of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and EU. It is of great importance to strengthen Sino-EU trade and economic cooperation in the period that global economic recovery is not yet sustainable. And the two sides shall enhance communication and understanding, and shall give full play to existing mechanism, joint effort in opposing trade protectionism. A healthy and steady development and a win-win situation of Sino-EU trade and economic relations serve business interests of both sides, and shall be welcomed by the people of the two countries.
De Gucht said that there are strong economic complementarities between China and EU, and European enterprises are benefitted from growing Chinese market. EU attaches great importance for trade and economic relations with China, and enhancing EU-China trade and economic relations serves the common interests of both sides, and EU would like to strengthen cooperation with China to further promote bilateral trade and economic relations with a practical attitude.
